Othniel: Courage of Obedience (Judges 1: 11--21)
11. From there they advanced against the people living in
Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher).
12. And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Acsah in
marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher."
13. Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it;
so Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage.
14. One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask
her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her,
"What can I do for you?"
15. She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have
given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." Then Caleb
gave her the upper and lower springs.
16. The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite,
went up from the City of Palms with the men of Judah to live among the people
of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad.
17. Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their
brothers and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally
destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah.
18. The men of Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron--each
city with its territory.
19. The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession
of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains,
because they had iron chariots.
20. As Moses had promised, Hebron was given to Caleb, who
drove from it the three sons of Anak.
21. The Benjamites, however, failed to dislodge the
Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there
with the Benjamites.
Judges chapter 1 tells the story of the conquest of nine of
the twelve tribes of Israel. This story shows their successes and the failures
of the compromises behind them. The first beginning begins with a description
of the tribe of Judah. The Lord says: "Judah is to go; I have given the
land into their hands." But the tribe of Judah marched with the tribes of
Simeon. Then they experienced the victory the Lord gave.
Listening to this story can feel like a beautiful story of success.
But if you look a little bit deeper, you can see that it's not. In the great
covenant of Joshua 24, the people promised, "We will ... follow His
word." But they didn’t completely obey the first word. Common sense is
understandable. The first step to a new path you have never experienced before!
Perhaps they were afraid. So they might have thought that going up with the
tribe of Simeon, one of the closest tribes to them, would be a good way to
relieve that fear. But it was a compromise with God's Word. It was half
obedience. Small compromise due to fear. This seemingly insignificant thing began
to spread around like a plague.
Afterwards, they compromised because they were in a military
chariot and felt militarily inferior. They compromised by thinking that it was
much more economical to make people in the land work for them than to drive
them out of God's command. Common sense, for my convenience, now for a while
... When I begin to compromise God's Word for any reason, my ability as a
Christian is lost in my life. God's Word comes from being obedient. Compromises
in smaller places become more and more widespread. And at some point, we take
away the power of God's Word from our lives.
I think it's because we think don’t do it often in
compromise with the Word. (Verse 19) But God's evaluation is different. They thought
couldn’t do it, but actually they didn’t do. (2: 2) Military threaten, economic
interests ... Those who lived in Judges had many reasons to “do not” obey God's
Word. But these couldn’t be the reason. He never lead us to ruin in our lives
for whom obeys his Word. (1 Corinthians 10:13)
Today's talk introduces a family that sets the example of
obedience, not compromise. (12-13) Caleb and his son-in-law are Othniel. Caleb
was one of the leaders of the tribe of Judah during the wilderness, and one of
two surviving in the land of Canaan. He confessed at Joshua 14: 11-12: “You
yourself heard then that the Anakites were there and their cities were large
and fortified, but, the LORD helping me, I will drive them out just as he
said." The land of Caleb's occupation was the greatest warrior of the age.
The city was large and solid. The situation was discouraging. But he was not
discouraged by the weight of the situation. When I put my faith in and obey
God's promises rather than the size of the situation, he was able to conquer
the land according to the Word. (Verse 20)
Obedience is not something that happens a situation is
acceptable. In spite of the situation, it’s try to walk with courage. To those
who have this courage of obedience, the Lord shows His power. Do not be pressed
by the size of the situation. Let us be God's people, living the taste of the
Lord with the courage of obedience.
